Making Oil Work for Poor People in Uganda
The emergence of the oil sector in western Uganda has raised hopes of significant local economic upturn and new job creation. However experience in areas such as the Niger Delta shows how in the long-term oil extraction can severely undermine the livelihoods of resident communities, especially the poorest groups. This project aims to build the capacity of micro and small enterprises and local workers to compete for new business opportunities and jobs. The project will also raise awareness among oil companies and the government of the need for purchasing practices which provide incentives for contractors to engage local micro and small enterprises and workers.

Camel Milk in Kenya: a Key Resource for Vulnerable People
Camel milk is a source of food and income for the camel herders of dry, remote Garissa in Kenya. However, milk is not regularly available to consumers during droughts, and the hygiene standards practiced by the traders and processing centres are very rudimentary. This project aims to help everyone invovled make changes to their basic practices, leading to more milk being produced year round and safety guarantees for consumers. This should increase income and result in better fed, healthier herder children and camels.

Kanyenathi: building an inclusive urban future
Street vendors in South African cities face physical eviction and confiscation of their goods, a legacy of apartheid's practices of 'cleaning up' and dividing society. Urban planners and local politicians see street markets as a failure of the economy. However, it is an important part of the local economy, especially for the urban poor, the less educated and women micro-entrepreneurs. This project helps vendors in Durban unite and lobby for their inclusion in urban planning. It also lobbies for investments to make it safer, cleaner and more efficient to do their business and for consumers to come and shop.

Addressing Gender Inequalities to Improve Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes
Narok County has a high level of maternal deaths and a low level of reproductive health service use compared to other parts of Kenya. Access to health facilities is poor. Many women don’t have the power to make decisions related to their health. Female circumcision and marriage and childbearing at an early age, common in Narok, increase the risk of birth complications. This project will bring health services closer to communities by training and supporting community health workers. Community activities will be carried out to challenge gender and power dynamics that compromise women’s health. As a result, more women will use reproductive services and their health will improve.

Oxfam - Trade Special Initiative
Women in Ethiopia do between 50 and 80 per cent of the work in agriculture yet see little of the income from the sales of the produce they grow. Their participation in formal cooperatives is less than 10% as the rules of membership often discriminate against them, they are not viewed as producers and do not hold title to land. This also prevents them from accessing finance and credit. Gender-based violence is wide-spread and goes unchecked and unpunished. The Ethiopian government is pushing a strategy of export-led growth to address widespread poverty and transform agriculture. Government extension workers support the formation of farmer cooperatives and technical guidance for improving production. Government policies introduced to improve women's situation and to access the income they deserve from their work are poorly implemented. This project aims to organise over 28,000 women into self-help groups for savings and credits and for honey production which is an ideal income generating activity for women. The groups will be clustered to form primary cooperatives ensuring women's participation as full members in their own right. The cooperatives will be linked to private investors to access technical support to improve quality and productivity. Demand for honey outstrips supply both for domestic consumption and export so the scale up will respond to a ready market leading to a significant increase in women's income. Poor women will be given practical literacy training using innovative techniques. They will be coached to assume leadership positions to find a voice where currently they have none. For the first time, they will have direct access to credits and loans from financial institutions. The project will work with local universities to strengthen government's ability to provide technical support in beekeeping in the formation of cooperatives, labour-saving technologies and to integrate functional adult literacy training into its package of services. The entire process of cooperative support will be transformed through influencing government to change restrictive laws that favour men over women. Men and women will be trained to understand the causes of discrimination against women to change attitudes and behaviour at household, community and cooperative level. All of this change can be achieved through taking a bottom-up approach to enabling women to become organised, to increase their income as producers and realise their social, economic and political rights as women. Ample evidence exists to show that when women control family income, the whole family benefits as women prioritise sending their children to school and improving household nutrition.

Scaling innovative rural distribution for farmer inputs: Farm Shop's retail micro-franchise network
Kenya's smallholder farmers are under-served by markets, which fail to deliver seeds, agrochemicals and veterinary products with reliable consistency and quality, or at an affordable price. This project involves setting up a network of franchised retail outlets as a social enterprise, supplying them with products demanded by farmers that can be sold at a fair price. The project supports the enterprise with business management training, helping it to establish appropriate systems. The project also helps the enterprise to reach its target clients and market to them in their communities. The project will benefit farming families through increased farm productivity, resulting in increased income.

Mothers On The margins maternal Health for Ethiopian pastoralist Regions (MOTHER)
Pastoralist women in Southern Ethiopia face very high risks of dying in childbirth. The majority of girls are subjected to female circumcision, kept out of school, and forced into early marriage and teenage pregnancies. Government maternity services in health centres are not well adapted to the needs of pastoralist women and hardly reach any of these ‘Mothers on the Margins’. This project will take mobile services out to them, wherever they are, providing family planning, antenatal care, postnatal and child health care. It will help women to start health insurance, nutrition gardens, and community meetings to discuss mother and child health problems with husbands and elders, and support them to voice their needs to government.

Unlocking Talent Through Technology, Malawi
According to UNESCO, under two-thirds of adults in Malawi can read. This project aims to improve children's literacy and numeracy skills in the infant years of primary school in Malawi. Every week, children are taken through a number of topics linked to the curriculum. Teachers are trained to support this work and adapt their own teaching practice in the classroom. Small classrooms are built for each school, allowing smaller classes. This work has demonstrated significant gain in an eight week period for some children.

Freetown Urban Slums Initiative
Freetown slums are in a terrible state, often without piped water or access to proper toilets. Most houses are badly built and often get flooded and cholera is a real problem. This project will support young people living in eight slums in Freetown. The project will provide training for jobs and apprenticeships, as well as affordable small loans. It will help people to manage money and set up small business. It will also improve access to basic services, such as clean water and drainage and encourage better health and hygiene practices. The project will also help local organisations become stronger and get better at trying to make the government keep its promises. As a result people will be healthier and have more money, leading to a better quality of life in the slums, especially for women and young people.

Promote Mifumi Project
More than a third of all women worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, usually from a male partner, according to the World Health Organisation. An estimated 70% of Ugandan women suffer some form of domestic violence in their lives, yet less than 6% of the offenders get convicted. Many Ugandans believe that domestic violence is a personal issue and is sometimes justified. Families who experience violence often don’t get help from government services and laws are rarely implemented in their communities. MIFUMI train members of the community and government workers like police, magistrates and health workers to help woman affected by violence. These trained members help find these women refuges and safe temporary places to stay, support them to take their cases to court and help women to become financially independent and to join support groups. These trainees will also work to change men’s attitudes about violence against women, so that local communities change some of their customs and views about this issue. MIFUMI will also launch Domestic Violence Watch to monitor how people respond to domestic violence in Uganda and they are stepping up their work to influence and change national policy and practice across the country.

Empowering young slum dwellers for the social and economic transformation of slum communities in Freetown
Over 90% of the population of Freetown live in slums, which are overcrowded with poor housing and unsanitary conditions. Over 60% of young people are unemployed. After the success of a previous project there, this follow-on will expand work to a further six slums. There will be a focus on training so that residents increase their literacy levels and develop new employable skills as well as learn other life skills. New water and toilet facilities will be installed, and young people encouraged to run programmes about improving people''s hygiene and health. Local slum residents will learn how to save money on a regular basis and how to make a detailed profile of the settlements they live in. They will then use this information to press for improvements to these slum areas.

Empowering Young Women and Girls in Freetown's Urban Slums
In Sierra Leone, women are taught to be submissive to men from a young age and are often economically dependent and seen as the property of men. Harassment, violence and rape are common occurrences, with perpetrators rarely held accountable. This project aims to address the root causes of sexual and gender-based violence in the slums of Freetown. It increases the knowledge that girls, young women and their communities have of their rights and the laws that protect them, as well as building awareness of sexual and reproductive health. Local community organisations are helped to influence the policy that deals with these issues. The project also improves services for women who have experienced violence, and generates opportunities to improve their livelihoods.

Peri-Urban Community-driven models for equitable services (COMEQS) - Project
Residents of informal settlements in Lusaka suffer from inadequate garbage disposal services. Littering, dumping and burning of waste results in disease, water pollution, contamination of land and hazardous blockage of drainage systems. The project will test new approaches to fee collection for garbage collection services in order to find ways to improve solid waste management systems and make them sustainable. Improved services are expected to lead to secure livelihoods for waste collectors, stronger collaboration between community-based organisations, better environmental conditions, an improved quality of life for residents, and options for replication in other urban settlement in Zambia

Improving producer livelihoods in Swaziland
Unemployment in Swaziland is around 41%, and even higher among women. For every 10 people employed 23 people depend on them. This project works to create new jobs and better working conditions by supporting a fair trade network of 50 socially orientated micro-businesses. The project helps the micro-businsses grow into formal, profitable businesses selling both locally and for export. This creates new jobs paying a living wage, and also promotes social programmes for staff and workers including greater awareness of HIV in the workplace to help people stay in work.

Transforming Urban Slums in Lusaka
Most people who live in the slums of Lusaka in Zambia have to use a pit latrine which is often shared with other households. Many of these are full because they cannot easily be moved or emptied. Almost every year flooding causes these pits to overflow making living conditions unbearable and leading to a high incidence of disease and illness. This project will roll out an innovative way to deal with this waste, training teams of pit emptiers to transport the waste in a safe way and supporting them to treat the waste properly so that some of it can be re-used (e.g. as fertiliser). The project will test this process and in doing so intends to replicate the approach in other slums so that it can benefit more people. It aims to make slums more pleasant to live in, and reduce disease and illness there.

Maanda: Using the law and legal mechanisms to address HTPs in West Africa
Though some African governments have introduced legislation to protect women and girls from harmful traditional practices such as FGM it is often poorly implemented. Through this project, local organisations will hold the governments of Mali and Mauritania to account. This project identifies cases of abuse that can be brought to court, whether locally, nationally, regionally or internationally. It also supports activism in these communities to bring about change. The project aims to force a widespread change in attitudes in both countries, as well as across the region, and for it to happen at a faster pace.

Developing rights-based and empowering approaches to mobilise (DREAM) action to end FGM
The majority of women in Gambia (76%) and Sierra Leone (88%) are affected by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The project is addressing this using a community based approach working directly with young women and their communities to provide services and protection and helping young women take action together as well as seek attitude change in communities. At the same time it is working in both countries to seek more widespread change by advocating for the creation and implementation of legal frameworks that ensure that girls and young women are protected from FGM.

A People Centred Finance Facility for Cape Town
Roughly one million people live in slums to the south east of Cape Town, and over the next few years their population is predicted to double in size. They are built on sand dunes with regular flooding and frequent fires. Water and toilets are few and far between and it is expensive to reach the city for work. Community Organisation Resource Centre will encourage large numbers of poor people to save small amounts every day. These savings will be used as a community contribution of 20% towards improvements, with the other 80% coming from Comic Relief. Residents will decide the priorities and the city authorities have agreed to help pay for better access to water, toilets and electricity.

Empowering young female slum dwellers to tackle gender based violence in Lusaka
Many women in Zambia experience sexual or gender-based violence. In Lusaka's slums, there are growing numbers of women who are unemployed, engage in sex for money, and increase their risk of violence as a result. This project creates spaces where women can share their experiences, get counselling, and understand their rights. It strengthens women’s access to justice by working with social services and the police. Some women also receive support to help them create small businesses. The project also encourages younger men to reject violence against women and become positive role models themselves. Ultimately, the project aims to reduce violence against women, and help participants to deal with their experiences of violence.

African Coffee Special Initiative
Most small coffee farmers lack the knowledge of global markets to get the best price for their product and avoid exploitation. This project trains farmer’s co-operatives across Africa to produce high quality coffee that demands a good price. It promotes sustainable farming practices that are resilient to climate change, and helps women to take an equal role in running the organisation. The project gives assistance with marketing, certification and business management so that co-operatives can thrive in the global marketplace, and the different co-operatives are encouraged to share their knowledge. As the farmers collectively own the co-operatives, the project helps them make a decent living and improve their lives.

Leave no child behind: Improving Early Childhood Development in Malawi
Malawian children with disabilities are often hidden away from public life and rarely get an education. Access to education is made worse by a lack of knowledge about children with disabilities, teachers lacking the capacity to teach children with disabilities, and an inappropriate school environment. This project works with several local and international partners in Malawi to support families as they enrol their children in early childhood education, and to build an approach to inclusive education into the training provided to early childhood teachers. The quality of inclusive education offered is improved, and more links are built between early education and primary schools. This work improves participants’ ability to continue throughout the education system. By working with schools, communities and government, this project offers an affordable model so the work can continue into the future.

Empowering women in Kordofan through non-wood forest products for income and food security
Women in central Sudan harvest forest products for income and food but stay poor, as men retain most of the income, and because collection and marketing are unorganized. This project creates women-led associations to collect, store, process and market wild fruits, gum Arabica and honey, and to share what they learn with other villages. The community agrees on how natural resources will be used. A small grants fund helps participants start individual small businesses. A revolving loan fund promotes alternatives to firewood and charcoal for cooking, reducing deforestation. The project aims to boost women’s earnings and help them start their own businesses.

Sustainable Production and Marketing of Forest Products
The project responds to poverty and high deforestation rates in western Ethiopia by supporting communities to create forest management co-operatives. These make legal agreements with the government to conserve the forest and use its resources sustainably. The co-operatives develop incense and honey businesses to increase household incomes as well as boosting the participation of women and young people. The project has local partners who market incense and honey, and also partners with two civil society organisations who specialise in community training and women's leadership and life skills. The project works to build the skills of its partners as well as to demonstrate the viability of Ethiopia's forest management policy.

Strengthening Leadership and Governance in African Women's Rights Organisations
Across Africa women continue to face discrimination and marginalisation. They often experience gender-based violence, poor access to healthcare, and high rates of maternal and infant mortality. A key reason these challenges have persisted is leadership of women’s organisations, business and government has been weak. This project introduces an innovative, long-term approach that strengthens the leadership skills of both individuals and organisations. This way, women and their organisations can secure and protect their rights, increase the access they have to services, and also gain a greater opportunity to represent their interests.

A quality teacher for every child in Mali
This project addresses the quality of teaching across the lower years of community secondary schools in the Segu region of Mali. These schools are run and paid for by communities and are extremely under-resourced. Comic Relief funded the first phase of this work, which targeted teachers in community primary schools. It was hugely successful and resulted in the Government of Mali's adoption of the training modules and teacher competency profiles it developed. This phase provides on-going support to teachers through mobile phones, delivering training modules, model lessons and linking teachers and schools. This model has the potential to be adopted across the country, benefitting all Malians.

Improving Life Chances&Household Income of People with Disabilities in 8 Subcounties-Northern Uganda
There are about 16,000 people with disabilities in Moyo District, Northern Uganda, a rural area recovering from a long period of armed conflict. These people need specific assistance to have a chance of getting a job or setting up a new enterprise. This project provides rehabilitation support, training, and career counselling to people with disabilities, helping them to acquire locally-relevant vocational skills. Many also get group support, loans, or intensive training so they can acquire formal jobs or set up new businesses for themselves. Traditional attitudes to disability are harsh, so the project also runs awareness raising programmes to reduce both social stigma and the barriers to finding jobs. The project aims to help people with disabilities gain employment and provide for themselves.

Marginalised Girls (and Boys) Claim Their Right to Quality Education (Tanzania)
Only one in three girls in Tanzania makes it to secondary school. Many drop out because of pregnancy, forced marriage, damaging traditional customs or because the cost is too high. Many families do not value girls’ schooling. In school, the girls risk sexual and physical abuse. This project works with communities and schools to tackle these issues, raising awareness, setting up parents’ councils and children’s clubs, training teachers, improving inspection and lobbying the government for change. As a result, more girls should go to school, do better and move onto secondary education. They will be helped to improve their confidence, have a say in decisions that affect them and be safer from abuse.

Developing communities of practice on informal settlement upgrading
Living conditions for most of South Africa’s poor have hardly improved over the last 20 years, and for some they have actually got worse. It is still a huge task just to get everyone the most basic facilities, like clean water. This project will support three organisations in Cape Town who are helping poor people take charge of improving their own lives. It will help these organisations to analyse and share their results, and work successfully with local government, the media and other groups nation-wide using their findings to influence. This will increase the impact of these organisations'' work in helping the urban poor of South Africa

Lasting Change IKAPA Through VPUU
The City of Cape Town built 7,000 new houses in 2012, but there are still 400,000 families officially on the waiting list, many living in dangerous, impoverished slums. Over the last six years an innovative project has been developed that allows residents to make decisions on what services their community needs, and to be in charge of the improvements themselves. It also reduces crime through education, sport and employment. This project will now be rolled out into three new deprived areas with serious histories of violence. The project will provide basic services like water and toilets as well as more advanced help, like education for young children, legal aid (particularly for women), and training for people to start their own businesses.

Improving education for deaf and hard of hearing children in Ethiopia
Very few deaf children in Ethiopia go to school. Those that do quickly drop out, having learnt little. This project works with schools to show that it is possible for these children to thrive. It works with parents, communities and the government to change attitudes, as well as hugely increasing the use of sign language. This demonstrates how deaf and other children who struggle in the system can learn. The project helps create a situation where deaf children can go on to play a full role in society and the government can achieve their aim of full inclusion of all children.

Enabling effective community-based approaches to early childhood development
The programme proposed will enable effective community based approaches to early childhood development for children from birth to six years old in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia. The Firelight Foundation, along with three Lead Partners (one in each country), will strengthen the organisational and technical capacity of community-based organisations (CBOs) to develop, refine and share their approaches to Early Childhood Development (ECD). The ECD interventions delivered by the CBOs vary but all respond to at least one of the following: early school readiness, early infant child health and development interventions, the development of parental knowledge and skills, the development of learning through play in a variety of community based settings.

Improving equitable access for the urban poor to water and sanitation services in Kampala
Uganda’s urban population is growing fast, with many people moving to the towns and cities in search of work. Yet urban amenities are not keeping up with this pace of growth and local authorities have limited capacity to address the challenges. In Kampala, roughly two-thirds of the city’s entire population live in slums, mostly located in flood-prone areas of the city. Access to clean water and decent latrines is limited. Three in every four illnesses are preventable water borne diseases, accounting for a high percentage of deaths in children under-five. This project will work with residents of a slum area in Kampala to dramatically improve access to water and sanitation services, as well as increase understanding of the critical importance of hygiene. Latrines and water tanks will be constructed in 25 schools. Hygiene education campaigns in the schools and wider community will complement a parallel initiative to build community-access latrines in the slum. Government workers will receive training in delivering improved water and sanitation services and community groups will be strengthened to hold local authorities to account. As a result, slum-dwellers, and particularly children, will have access to safe water and sanitation, improving school attendance and bringing measurably improved health and living conditions.

Improving sexual and reproductive health and creating sustainable livelihoods for youth in Freetown slums in Sierra Leone
More than 90% of the population of Freetown live in slums that lack basic services or opportunities for work. Most people are young, and only live on average for 48 years. Women have even fewer opportunities and are often victims of violence. The vast majority of young girls do not finish school, there are high levels of teenage pregnancy and the number of women who die in childbirth is the third highest worldwide. This project will train young people how to look after themselves sexually, give them skills to make them more employable, and teach them how to manage money. It will then give them access to small loans to start businesses. All of these things will improve the health and prospects of young people, particularly women.

Maternal and Neonatal Implementation for Equitable Systems (MANIFEST)
Each year in Uganda, nearly 46,000 newborns and 6,000 women die from problems during pregnancy and childbirth. Many of these deaths could be prevented if women and newborns received all the health services they needed, and parents practiced good newborn care. Working across five districts in Eastern Uganda the project seaks to improve the health of mothers and newborns in each project area. This project continues the work of previous projects, which focused on visits to pregnant women and newborn babies by volunteer community health workers, vouchers for transport and services, and work to improve care in health facilities. There is also a focus on scaling up these approaches while exploring ways to plan and pay for the work.

Programme for OCV to access and receive quality education through systemic change (PRO. OVC) (Zambia)
In Zambia, there has been a rapid development of community schools where children are educated outside the formal school system. A community school is community based, owned, funded and managed, and meets the basic education needs of students who cannot enter government schools. However, the quality of education in community schools can be poor, retention rates are low, and learner achievement is weak. This project will advocate for proper implementation of government policy with regard to supporting community schools and strengthen community capacity both to manage community schools and to mobilise government support. It will work to improve teaching and learning within community schools in three provinces of Zambia, and advocate at a national level for appropriate government support.

Each year in Uganda, nearly 46,000 newborns and 6,000 women die from problems during pregnancy and childbirth, many of which could be prevented. This project helps families prepare for birth, provide better care to newborns, and know when to seek medical help. It is based on the lessons learned from two pilot projects that led to a big increase in the use of maternal health services and improved care for newborns. The project will increase the number of midwives, train health workers who can make home visits, buy equipment for maternal and newborn care, and educate men and community leaders about the importance of this care. Pregnant women and their families will join savings groups so they have money for the pregnancy and childbirth.

In Ghana, 450 out of every 100,000 women die every year, compared with 12 per 100,000 in the UK. Almost one in ten children in Ghana die before their fifth birthday, mainly from diseases which are preventable or which could have been treated if care was given in time. This project will build on a successful programme which halved child deaths in the target area within three years by posting nurses to rural communities to treat people locally. It will adapt the programme so it can work in towns and cities. It will also help to develop an ambulance service that is suited to local conditions and can carry on after the project ends.

African Storybook Project (ASP) (South Africa, Kenya, Uganda)
In Sub-Saharan Africa, a child with five years of schooling has a 40% chance of being illiterate. The shortage of good reading materials in children’s mother tongue is often cited as a stumbling block. When reading materials are not in their own language, children have to work twice as hard: first to learn the new language; and second to learn how to read. Fewer readers also mean that there is less demand for local language books, which feeds claims that publishing local language readers is not cost effective. This project is building a vibrant on-and off-line community of story tellers, teachers and parents to develop an accessible online collection of literacy materials that can easily be adapted and translated into other languages while keeping their reading-friendly format and pictures. Low bandwidth versions and use of mobile phone technology means that teachers can access these materials even in areas where internet access is infrequent and a range of pilot sites across southern and east Africa help the project to evaluate the impact these materials have.

Ifakara Health Institute - Empower II
Tanzania has some good policies on maternal healthcare, but its health services aren’t doing as well as they could be. The rate of newborn deaths has hardly changed over the last 10 years, and maternal death rates are also far off the Millenium Development Goal target. Ambitious plans are held back by problems such as shortages of staff, poor management and a lack of information for planning. Ifakara - Empower I improved the maternal healthcare of four districts in different ways. The new project will build on this experience and then roll it out across six new districts. As well as improving the health of these ten districts, the project will work out the most effective options, so that policy makers will know the best way to improve the health of mothers and children across the country.

Advancing the right to read in Rwanda
Reading is a basic skill that underpins success at school and in life. However, around the world there is an alarming rise in the numbers of children completing primary school who are unable to read well enough to learn. In Rwanda, enrolment rates in primary school are now high, but this rapid expansion in school attendance has led to issues around quality and learning. The aim of this project is to ensure that during the early years of primary school, Rwandan children acquire strong literacy skills. Save the Children will work to improve the teaching of reading, through in-service teacher training, by increasing the supply of high-quality local language reading materials and by doing community-based activities to engage parents and develop a popular culture of reading. As a result, over 100,000 children in primary schools in Rwanda will have an opportunity to acquire the basic literacy skills they need for on-going learning success and for life. The project has the potential to make a real difference to children’s lives.

Absolute Return for Kids
Although it can be prevented and treated, diarrhoea is responsible for 15,000 deaths of Zambian children each year. However, a new vaccine for rotavirus that can prevent up to one-third of all diarrhoeal deaths is now available. This project will help to reduce diarrhoeal illness and deaths of children using an integrated approach. ARK will provide rotavirus vaccines for children in the four districts of Lusaka Province, covering about one-sixth of Zambia''s total population. They will train health workers to better manage children with diarrhoea, help make drugs to treat diarrhoea more available in the public and private sectors and help families and communities learn to prevent and treat the condition. The project is linked to a research programme to show the effects of this holistic approach on child deaths. Partners of ARK are working with government to create and document a model diarrhoea control programme that can be expanded to other parts of the country. This will result in fewer diarrhoeal illnesses and deaths of children under-five in Zambia.

Modelling Inclusive Education in Tanzania
In Tanzania, only around 3 - 5% of disabled children go to school, and many of those that do are sent to special schools. New policy aims to make all schools inclusive and accessible to children living with disabilities. This project will help to show how this might work. By working with children, families, schools and government agencies, it will try to break down the common barriers that stop disabled children succeeding in schools. It will provide equipment, train teachers so they are aware of disabled children’s needs, and tackle discrimination from family members and others in the community. As a result, more disabled children will be able to attend mainstream school and their lives will be transformed.

African Population And Health Research Center
With many people moving to live in the towns and cities of Kenya there is a fast growth in informal settlements or slums. As a result, nearly one in five Kenyans lives in a slum. These settlements are usually illegal and informal with few, if any, public health services. The gap left by the absence of the public health sector in slums has been filled by a vibrant but largely unregulated and unsupported private sector providing services of variable quality and cost. The project will strengthen six private not-for-profit health centres, making them one-stop primary level centres. Staff will be trained to provide high-quality maternal and child health services. District health teams will supervise private health providers, and facilities will be helped to access the highest level of support from the public sector. A network of community health workers will visit homes to identify people in need of health services and refer them to health facilities. A security service run by youth groups will be set up to safely escort women or families to health facilities if they need medical help during the night. An ambulance service will be set up for emergencies. As a result, the health of women, newborns and children will be improved. More broadly, the project seeks to show how the public, private and community sectors can work together to improve the health of people living in two Nairobi slums. The project will engage in policy dialogue to influence health provision in slums in Kenya and beyond.

In Kenya, child and maternal death rates are high and many deaths could be prevented if people received the help they needed and took better care of protecting their own health. Kenya’s Ministry of Health has plans for better health, especially of women and children, that include using volunteer community health workers organised in Community Units. These units will educate people on how to prevent disease and recognise serious health problems, and link people to the formal health system. However, financial constraints mean that many areas do not have Community Units. This project will help five districts realise the vision of Kenya’s Community Health Strategy. It will train and support volunteers to provide health education and refer them to health services. Volunteers will collect health data at the household level so that health planners understand the needs of the people they serve. Civil society organisations will educate communities about maternal and child health. Health workers will be trained to provide better maternal and child health care. The project will help reduce the numbers of deaths of mothers in childbirth, newborns and children under five.

Supporting Children's School Readiness and Retention (Uganda)
Whilst the number of children going to primary school in northern Uganda has increased, many children are failing to learn and are dropping out of school. For children in remote rural areas, school is often far away, the quality of education is poor and there is limited support from parents at home, many of whom missed out on an education themselves because of long years of conflict. This project aims to break this cycle of low achievement and retention. It combines work in local communities, work in schools, research and advocacy to achieve change. 800 new low cost home learning centres will be set up in villages in eight districts of northern Uganda. Each centre will be linked to a primary school. The centres will provide informal early childhood care and education for children under six. At weekends and in the evenings children who are at school can study at the centres. Classes will be run in the community for adults in literacy and numeracy. Village health teams will visit the centres to ensure that children are healthy and well-nourished. The project will work with government to improve the quality of teaching in school and to strengthen home-school links. At a national level, the project will aim to influence implementation of government policy on early childhood education. As a result of the project, significantly more children from poor rural communities in northern Uganda will enrol, stay in and achieve more in school.

Every child needs a good teacher (Mali)
One in four Malian children do not go to primary school at all (half a milion in total), and just over half complete primary education. Around 40% of them attend community schools where the teachers are rarely trained and are mostly unqualified. This pilot project will increase the skills of all 2,500 community teachers in Ségou, one of eight Malian provinces, using a locally-developed ‘competence framework’. This will benefit 80,000 community school pupils, and aims to increase the number of children passing annual exams and completing primary school on time by 20%. The project will also tell parents, teachers and children about the framework, so they know what to expect of a ‘good teacher’.

Mainstreaming psychosocial support into the education system to enhance education outcomes (Zambia)
Although more children in Zambia are enrolling in school, one in ten still miss out altogether and others struggle to stay in and succeed at school. Among these are children who are permanently separated from one or both of their parents, children with chronic illnesses like HIV and those with elderly or ill carers. Currently, in Zambia, over half of all orphans are not in school. Experience has shown that the learning ability of children is directly linked to their well-being at home and in the community. This project aims to embed caring for the well-being of children into the education system in Zambia to ensure that children’s emotional and social, as well as physical needs, are met. To do this the project will roll out a teacher training programme to provide psychosocial support for children. The curriculum has already been developed by REPSSI in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, UNICEF and teacher training colleges. As well as training over 1,000 teachers, the project will build the skills of 300 community-based volunteers working with vulnerable children in the same communities as the schools. Over the five-year period, these teachers and community volunteers will directly support over 40,000 children and young people. In addition mainstreaming psychosocial support means that over 100,000 children in 420 schools will be supported by this special initiative.

Every year in Tanzania, 110,000 babies are born to HIV-positive mothers. Without intervention, nearly half of these children will die before their second birthday. Many HIV infections in infants can be prevented if HIV-positive pregnant women and their infants receive all of the recommended drugs at the right time. Although Tanzania has a national programme for Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT), many HIV-positive women and their children do not complete the full course of recommended drugs and interventions. This project aims to reduce the number of infants born with HIV by strengthening the demand for health services by pregnant women and testing an alternative PMTCT drug regimen. Health workers based in communities will encourage all pregnant women to learn their HIV status, attend antenatal care four times, and deliver their babies in health facilities. Women who fall out of the system will be followed up to ensure better care for both mother and child.

Ifakara Health Institute - Connect
Whilst Tanzania has made impressive gains in the reduction of child mortality in recent years, there are still a high percentage of newborn deaths within the first 28 days of life. Many of these deaths could be prevented by simple practices at home and by making sure that pregnant women, mothers and newborns get the care they need when they are ill. This project aims to reduce the numbers of preventable deaths of mothers in childbirth, newborns and children under five by strengthening the links between households, communities and health facilities. The project will introduce paid Community Health Agents (CHAs) to provide a range of health services in rural villages in three districts. In addition, the project will strengthen referrals from communities to health facilities for health emergencies. The project will demonstrate the impact that CHAs have on the health of mothers, newborn, children and women of reproductive age and will provide evidence on practical, sustainable ways to support CHAs and to improve emergency referral systems.

Advancing the Frontiers of Sustainable Malaria Control in Liberia - A Model for Africa
In Liberia, over a third of children under the age of five have malaria. Malaria accounts for 41% of deaths of children under five, and for 35% of outpatient visits generally. As Liberia has recently emerged from a civil war that nearly destroyed its health service, many people don't visit health services. Instead, when they are sick they either don't seek care at all, or they visit local pharmacies and buy malaria drugs even when they've not been properly tested for malaria. This project trains providers of medicine in slums on how to correctly diagnose malaria, and subsidises effective drugs to treat it. It also tests a new way to prevent malaria with an insecticide-treated wall lining and seeing if it could be scaled up to be used across Africa.

Malaria Control in Mbale
Malaria is the most common cause of illness and death in both children and adults in Mbale, Uganda. When detected early, malaria can be treated with effective malaria medicines that are now generally available for free in public sector health facilities. However, if left too late, malaria soon becomes life threatening, especially for children. The aim of this project is to help these children survive. The project will build the skills of health workers and improve the quality of the services people receive. They will ensure that children with danger signs of severe malaria are immediately referred to the right place and treated by staff with the necessary equipment, supplies, knowledge and skills. They will also work with families to make sure those children with danger signs are taken immediately to a higher-level health facility or hospital. As a result of the project, the number of malaria-related deaths of children under five in health facilities will be reduced.

Increasing access, retention and performance in primary education (Sierra Leone)
In recent years, only two in three children completed primary level education in Sierra Leone. Overall, the quality of education is poor, with no early childhood development provision. Educational attainment of girls is particularly low, due to gender-based violence, high levels of teenage pregnancy and harmful cultural practices, such as early marriage. The Child-to-Child Trust runs a community-based model of early childhood development and prepares pre-schoolers to enter primary school. The project provides life skills education to older children on topics including child protection, sex education and teenage pregnancy. It also supports teachers to improve classroom teaching and learning practice. As a result of the project, enrolment, retention and performance in primary schools has improved. Local communities are actively supporting their children, including the girls, through their primary education, and teachers now motivate and engage with their pupils much more effectively.

Empowering Women through Enterprises Development
Women’s work is the main source of income for many families in poor parts of Tanzania. The number of women running small businesses has increased dramatically in the last 20 years however most have faced lots of challenges that make it difficult to start and grow businesses. This project will support women entrepreneurs from poorer communities so they can grow their businesses and lift their families and communities out of poverty. This includes business training and activities addressing the challenges facing women. As a result of this project women will be more confident and capable of running thriving, lasting businesses, and they will earn more money. Women’s rights will be taught to both women and their partners. Ultimately, women’s role in household decision-making will be strengthened, and women will take leadership roles in their communities.

Better Health Outcomes through Mentoring and Assessment (BHOMA II)
In Zambia, 440 per 100,000 women die in childbirth every year, compared with 12 per 100,000 in the UK. Almost one in ten children die before their fifth birthday. Most deaths are preventable, but the public health system is short of staff and resources, meaning few people use it. This project seeks to improve the quality of care in health facilities in three rural districts of Lusaka province by training, mentoring and supporting health workers. The project also aims to promote the use of health services through community-level activities. This will lead to improved maternal and newborn health and fewer people dying from preventable illnesses.

Changing Futures for Girls (CFG) (Kenya)
At present girls in Kwale, a poor district near Mombasa in Kenya, are leaving school at a very young age and very few even complete their primary education. This is due to poor teaching, high levels of abuse of girls in schools, and strong pressures on them for early marriage. This project will work with teachers and girls in schools to improve girls' educational performance and with communities to improve girls' status and to help make them more aware of their rights. The aim is to get more girls to stay in school longer, to encourage them to wait till they are mature before marriage and childbirth, and to improve their chances of finding a job..

Tackling the drivers of sexual violence against girls in school (South Africa)
In South Africa, girls from all levels of society are affected by sexual violence at school. This project develops and tests a range of approaches to reduce the occurrence of sexual violence in school. Activities include the creation of safer and more effective schools, safer homes and community environments, and strengthening the income of girls, women and their families so that girls are able to continue their education without having to engage in transactional sexual relations to cover the cost of education and that families don’t feel compelled to remove daughters from school for financial reasons.

MORE MAMaZ: Scaling Up the Community Based Maternal and Newborn Health Response in Zambia
Zambia’s very high levels of maternal and new-born deaths could be much lower if the right health care was available at the right time. This project helps women to get care when they need it, through local solutions such as transport systems, community savings schemes, and through food banks which ensure women in hospital and their families have food available. This approach has been successful on a smaller scale and this grant extends its coverage. Learning from the success of the project also will help the programme to be built into district plans. As a result, more women will be able to use maternal health services that can save lives.

Improve maternal and newborn health outcomes in Malawi's Ntchisi district
Malawi has a high level of maternal and newborn deaths, many of which could be prevented by timely use of health services. This project will set up women’s groups to empower women to use maternal health services and will work with communities to increase knowledge of maternal and newborn health issues. To address the quality of care, the project will train health workers, set up quality improvement teams in health centres, and strengthen the use of data. As a result, more women and their newborns will seek and get the services they need to protect and improve their health.

Empowering women small-holder farmers in the rice value chain in Tanzania
Women do 70% of the work in rice production in Tanzania but see little of the income. There is a growing internal demand for good quality rice yet 20% of rice is imported. A 2 year pilot showed how linking women farmers directly with processors in a village-based contract farming model led to a 67% increase in price and almost doubled profit. This project will scale up this model by supporting 25,000 women to form producer groups to have contracts directly with processors. They will provide women with inputs and credit to improve quality and yields leading to increased income into their own pockets.

Teenz Alliance in Ending Sexual Violence in Schools
South Africa has some of the highest levels of violence against women in the world, and many girls have no idea about their rights. This project identifies girls across Gauteng province who are potential leaders, and teaches them how to develop awareness-raising campaigns on sexual violence and girls' rights in their schools through clubs. The project also develops school-based activities that promote safety at school and encourages regular community dialogues. It also works to address male attitudes towards girls and sexual violence. The project aims to help young women take the lead in reducing violence against them.

Kwanele Communities ensuring safe learning environments for girls
For girls to do well in education, they need schools free from sexual violence so they can reach their full potential and complete their education. South Africa has some of the highest levels of violence against women and girls in the world. Girls' rights are rarely known, let alone defended, and many schools lack safe, supportive environments where both girls and boys can question the gender roles they have grown up with. This project uses football to bring about change. Coaches create a safe space to get young men and women discussing gender, teenage pregnancy, contraception, HIV and relationships. All-female soccer tournaments bring together women from different generations to play in a friendly soccer tournament with a health and rights theme. The project aims to raise awareness and promote healthy, equal relationships.

Tackling Education Needs Inclusively II (TENI II) (Ghana)
In Northern Ghana, many girls and disabled children drop out of primary school within a few years, without having learnt to read and write. This project addresses the reasons behind this. It works with local government to train and motivate teachers and provide more female teachers in rural areas. It improves how schools are run, gets parents more involved, and lobbies for local laws to protect girls from harmful practices, such as early marriage. It gives girls and disabled children more opportunities to influence decisions that affect their education, so they can stay in school and get a better education.

Improving the quality of pre-primary education in Ghana through a network Model Practice Classrooms
Early childhood education is increasingly seen as a priority as it is the single best way to bring about large scale improvements in children's later ability to learn. However, in many developing countries - including Ghana - although government is committed to providing early childhood education, there are few trained teachers. This programme trains teachers and student teachers in a new methodology of learning that is child-centred, activity based, and focused on learning through play. The training takes place in model classrooms, through intensive practical workshops and small group meetings. Teachers receive additional training and a toolkit to help them make low-cost classroom resources and activities from recycled materials. The teachers are then supported and mentored as they pass on this training to others, including head teachers. The programme aims to demonstrate an effective way to improve the quality of education across Ghana through developing, testing and implementing an appropriate teacher training curriculum.

Promoting Inclusive Education for Disabled Children in Uganda Using a 'Child-to-Child' Approach
Up to 98% of disabled children in Africa are out of school. This project aims to address this imbalance through high quality inclusive education for children with disabilities, paying particular attention to girls. Despite rights enshrined in international legislation, meaningful child participation in education is rare. This project, based in three districts of northern Uganda, uses an innovative child-to-child approach, supporting all children to understand, discuss and take action on issues that impact their lives and protect themselves from harm. It also works through parent support groups in schools, nine of which have been the focus of a successful three year pilot project.

Promoting equal access to education in Malawi
In Malawi, typical class sizes are over 100 children, there are few educational resources or classroom furniture, and most teachers have no training to deal with learners who have special educational needs. This project promotes the inclusion of hearing impaired and disabled children in schools in the Kasungu and Nkhotakota districts of Central Malawi. It does this by offering training to learners, parents, teachers and to the community, promoting inclusion. It also works with teachers and state employees to fight for resources to be allocated to schools so that they can be made more inclusive. In doing so, the project seeks to create an environment in which many more disabled children go to school and achieve a quality education.

Pilot supporting young street-connected mothers to improve outcomes through quality ECD in Accra
A recent census found there are more than 30,000 young girls living and working on the streets of Accra, the capital of Ghana. Many have small children to support, and to survive they carry heavy loads, sell cheap goods, or engage in sex work. These young mothers may have limited experience of good parenting, so this project works to improve their skills to support their children's development, improve their financial literacy, and offer quality early years teaching to their children.

The Right to Learn: supporting girls to achieve their right to education and to freedom from GBV in Malawi
This project seeks to reduce the amount of Gender Based Violence that occurs in schools in Malawi by working with primary school boys and girls in Standards 6 to 8. They are doing this by creating structures for prevention, processes for reporting and a strong sense of accountability so that communities can hold the district government to account. It will train volunteers and paralegals, train teachers how to create safer schools and run supportive after school clubs in order to identify those girls most at risk of dropping out of school. The project also encourages girls already out-of-schools to re-enroll.

Combating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence to retain girls and boys in Malawian schools for improved
This project aims to tackle the prevalence of School Based Sexual Violence in schools. It will work with pupils, schools staff and communities to raise awareness and build effective and functional mechanisms to report and deal with any. There will be a primary focus on girls but boys are clearly integral to this work through their involvement and the ability and relevance of the mechanisms to support any incidences of sexual abuse against boys and young men. The mechanisms created will ensure that both communities and schools remain safe places for young people to grow up and develop in. Working with two experienced local organisations, Oxfam Malawi will be part of an effective partnership.

Modelling Inclusive Pre-Primary Education (MIPE)
The current pre-primary curriculum in Tanzania does not address inclusive education for children with disabilities. This project aims to provide an opportunity for very young children with disabilities to access quality and appropriate pre primary education across four districts in Tanzania. The call is for these children 'to achieve their potential' by being school ready and begin to develop key life and social skills. Teachers, senior district staff, community members and parents will all receive training or support to understand key issues, barriers and ways to support children with disabilities.

Investing in Futures: Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities in Tanzania
Children with disabilities often face unique problems within mainstream education. They are one of the largest and hardest to reach groups of marginalised children, and often some of the most vulnerable. This project is designed to ensure the inclusion of children with disabilities within mainstream education in Tanzania. Whole school health and learning assessments will take place to ensure those with hidden, mild, or misdiagnosed disabilities are identified and the appropriate educational or infrastructure support is put in place. 1000 children with disabilities will be enrolled in school, and communities & district education staff will be supported to better provide support structures to manage schools for future inclusion of all children in school.

Tuwekeze Pamoja: Working together to give children in Tanzania a better start to life
For a child growing up in rural Tanzania the chance of staying in school and achieving the grades needed to go to secondary school is low. This project aims to give children from birth to age six the best possible start to life by working with parents, schools, communities and government to promote a safe and conducive environment for learning - at home and at school. There is a large investment in research to understand what inputs at this early age really make a difference, with an opportunity to influence government policy and wider practice in early childhood development.

Scaling Up Readiness and Retention (SURE) Impact
Families living in Northern Uganda have very limited access to pre primary education. This project will offer community based, informal pre primary care through Home Learning Centres, run and managed by community volunteers. Parents are integral to the development of this work, receiving joint basic literacy classes alongside their children.Work with local schools ensures enrolment and government staff are extremely interested in, and supportive of this work. The project will also offer the opportunity to build a more rigorous evidence base for scale up and replication by others.

Providing access to infant stimulation & quality pre-primary education to children in rural Zimbabwe
In 2005, the Government of Zimbabwe announced that every primary school should operate an Early Childhood Development (ECD) class. Whilst these have been established, the delivery of quality early childhood care and development has been limited.
This project seeks to address these challenges by supporting ECD in four rural districts in Zimbabwe. Community members will be trained as volunteer pre-school teachers and the community will contribute nominal stipends. Teachers will be trained in techniques of learning through play. Children aged 3-5 years will receive regular health checks from government health workers and supplementary feeding will be provided by mothers. In addition, parents of very young children will be supported through home visits and communities will form committees to ensure all children are protected from harm and have the opportunity to enrol in pre -school education. Over 200 rural primary schools will be involved.

African Storybook consolidation
There are hundreds, if not thousands of languages spoken across the African continent, yet very few children's story books available. Saide's African Storybook project provides open access to hundreds of storybooks for children. Each book can be translated into other African language via their website and can be displayed in a variety of formats. Teachers, parents, professionals & children can also develop their own stories and uplaod them. Text can be removed or simplified so they can be shared with very young children and mother tongue translations support early reading skills. Dual language translations are also available to support learning English as part of the formal curriculum.

Improved education service provision through policy engagement with government
This project supports 665 community schools across four districts in Zambia. These schools offer education to the most vulnerable and marginalised communities and their children. They are run and owned by the communities and often supported by volunteer teachers. These schools, once seen as illegal, have been incredibly successful in supporting the Government's provision of education. Staff will work with the government to continue to influence education policies to ensure a quality education is offered through more sustainable and resourced community schools in the longer term.

Partnership for Empowerment of Vulnerable Girls and Women in Urban Slums of Kampala City (PEVUS)
Around 20,000 girls under the age of 18 are sex workers in Kampala’s slums, some as young as 13, many having been trafficked from rural areas. This can lead to high rates of HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, mental health disorders and exposure to violence from clients or the police. This project supports sexually exploited young women, helping them find less risky alternatives to make a living. Rehabilitation and vocational training helps participants develop the skills and confidence to find employment or start a business. The whole community benefits from improved access to services for sexual and reproductive health, and the project ensures both local communities and those in positions of authority acknowledge the importance of protecting the rights of young women forced into sex work.

WaterAid Kampala Slums Transformation Initiative
In the poorest slums around Kampala the majority of residents still lack access to a decent, affordable water supply and to sanitation services. Three quarters of illnesses are water borne or preventable, accounting for 17% of deaths in children under-five. Many schools lack even basic facilities, let alone separate latrines allowing privacy and appropriate segregation for girls and boys. This project builds on its previous success in providing clean water and sanitation. This includes constructing water catchment tanks and separate latrine facilities in schools as well as promoting the construction of household latrines. Public information and training programmes improve hygiene among school children and local communities. Slum dwellers are also encouraged to hold local authorities to account in order to improve local services. The project aims to improve the health and the living conditions of slum dwellers across Kampala.

Shelter and Settlements Alternatives Uganda Human Settlements Network
Uganda is one of Africa's most rapidly urbanizing countries, with 3.5 million people living in slums today, and an estimated 8 million by 2020. The need for sustainable housing solutions in Kampala becomes more critical by the month and many organisations continue to respond in different ways. However, co-ordination and collaboration is poor, and there are currently few opportunities for organisations to share information or to develop collective responses that protect the rights of slum-dwellers. This project helps slum-dwellers to establish housing co-operatives that give them a stronger voice and improve access to land. It also supports the development of an effective network for organisations working to improve the slums, increasing their access to key information and creating opportunities to participate in forming policy.

Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre (SLURC): Capacities and knowledge for improving well-being in informal settlements
Freetown’s slums are amongst the most difficult places to survive - let alone thrive - on earth. Faced with enormous challenges in providing shelter and services of any kind, many projects attempt to improve living conditions there. However, there is often insufficient information and data on the real scale and extent of the problems. This project trains and supports people so they can bring existing and new information together on Freetown’s slums in order to contribute to Freetown’s first urban development plan and ultimately the establishment of an urban resource centre. This aims to significantly improve the quality and coordination of services in the slums, leading to slums dwellers being more secure, safe and better off.

Care and protection of highly vulnerable children, young people and families in communities
There are an estimated 10,000 boys and girls surviving on Uganda's streets, neglected and exploited. Many thousands more are in fragile families and in danger of turning to a precarious street existence. This project builds on earlier Comic Relief funded work, applying tried and tested methods to help children move from the street back into nurturing families and safer communities. It helps to build stronger families and communities in known hotspot areas, so that children are less likely to leave home for a life on the street, risking their safety and health. The project also works with local authorities, supporting and encouraging them to better co-ordinate their efforts to protect and support vulnerable children and their families, so that children continue to stay safe and protected within families after the project ends.

Integrating cooperatives of orphaned farmers into commercial value chains in Rwanda
Rwanda has many young orphaned heads of households as a result of genocide and HIV/AIDS. This project has been building the business skills and the technical and organisational capacity of young orphaned men and women who farm fruits and vegetables. This grant will scale up the project so it can increase the incomes of people (60% women) across three districts and upgrade their associations to formal co-operatives, linking them to markets. It will also improve their agronomic techniques and the mix of products they use, based on business analysis from the original pilot project. The project aims to register co-operatives and help them become independently viable, helping vulnerable individuals to gain confidence and a livelihood.

Improving smallholder livelihoods through the sesame value chain (phase 3)
Small farmers in Tanzania earn around £25 a year and farmers growing cash-crops can often be exploited by intermediaries. An increasing global demand for sesame seeds offers opportunities for farmers to increase their income. This project connects farmers directly to buyers, which should result in a price increase of over 100%. Traders have signed a letter of intent to buy directly from farmers, through an innovative contract that could increase household income by 20%. Special attention is being paid to women and young people who have often been excluded from the benefits of cash crops, before now. The project aims to help farmers improve their lives through getting a fairer price for what they grow..

Developing the FTO cashew supply chain in West Africa for producers, workers, SMEs & the environment
Fruits and nuts are an important source of income for thousands of farmers in Burkina Faso, as well as creating steady jobs in transport, distribution, and processing for hundreds of workers, mostly women, in small enterprises and cooperatives. This project helps farmers to plant more cashew trees, improve farming practices and yields while focussing on quality to meet Fairtrade and organic standards to sell to European markets. By supporting processing facilities too, the project ensures that more of the final price stays in the country and makes it to poor farmers and workers. It also tests alternative cashew products and how to make safe energy from cashew nut waste.

Securing forest community livelihoods through sustainable smallholder cocoa development
Farmers living on the edge of the Gola rainforest in Sierra Leone are leaving their farms and adopting farming practices which drive deforestation, to feed their families. World cocoa prices are rising, but as a result of the civil war farmers can't access the information, training and materials they need, leading to lower yields, a reputation for poor quality and prices significantly below the market rate resulting in reduced incomes. Using a tried and tested approach this project works to build a viable cocoa cooperative, linking these remote farmers to global markets by establishing a Gola cocoa brand while preserving the rainforest to secure this livelihood for years to come.

Smallholder Market Access
More than half of all Zambians rely on agriculture for income. Few small-scale farmers have the security to decide what to grow, when and who to sell to and what the prices are for their crops. This project has started a social enterprise for tens of thousands of farmers across four regions, aiming to develop the services and products that farmers and traders say they need to make trading more efficient and less risky. It has tested a simple buyer-seller system which, with a basic telephone, gets information and trading contacts into the hands of farmers. It aims to raise earnings for both farmers and traders and reduce household poverty.

Oromia Coffee and Dairy Development Project (OCDDP): promoting gender and entrepreneurship in South Oromia
Coffee is one of Ethiopia’s greatest export earners. However, coffee yields, quality and incomes remain low even though many farmers are organised in co-operatives. Few women are members and they often do not get paid fairly for their work. This project works with the largest co-operative union in Ethiopia to address the root causes of the problems that farmers face. The project helps build the union’s capacity to support their members. It aims to improve the quality and production of coffee so that farmers earn more, as well as diversifying income by giving practical training in dairy farming. It also aims to combat the effects of climate change, distribute coffee seedlings, and increase women’s participation.

Horticulture Markets in Ethiopia for Women and Youth
Women practising small-scale horticulture in Ethiopia often make little money. This can be because of low levels of production, gender inequality, limited access to essential farming products such as seeds and fertilisers, or limited opportunities for marketing their goods. Young people are leaving farming and migrating to cities as they do not see a future for themselves. This project makes it easier for women and young people to make higher profits through a programme of structured support. Young people are helped to run collective enterprises both on and off farms. This small investment could provide an income in 3-4 months, as well as long-term opportunities to earn money.

Juicing Justice for Farmers
After a long civil war, farmers in the Casamance, Senegal, are working to develop the economy and have wild fruits to sell. This project helps thousands of farmers to organise a marketing association, to set up collection centres and to care for their land and wild forests better. Female farmers are directly supported so they can meet, learn new skills and ensure they are actively represented in the new organisations. Two Senegalese social enterprises are contributing to the project and provide the link to European markets. In addition, a UK Fair Trade juice pioneer is building a Fair Trade brand and a means of distribution for these products.

Calories and Household Incomes from Potatoes Sub-sector (CHIPS)
Many farmers and small business owners in Tanzania have low incomes. This project responds to growing urban demand for processed potato products by forming business groups of thousands of smallholder farmers, small retailers and vendors of potato products, aiming to double their incomes over four years. 30% of the participants are women. The project increases the supply of good quality potatoes, increases investment in processing, builds collaboration, removes barriers to efficiency and profitability, and improves the management and monitoring of these groups. Some funds will also be used to co-invest alongside the business groups’ own profits, in order to respond to growing supply and demand.

There are twenty womens' dairy groups with nearly 2,000 members that are in a strong position to benefit from this potential. This project will help them to organise themsleves, brand and distribute their products, collect and process milk regularly, upgrade their factory and work together to be more efficient.

Empowering women entrepreneurs through provision of intergraded business development services-Virtual Incubator
In spite of a favourable policy environment aimed at improving equality, only 4% of Tanzania's female population is in formal employment. Women running small enterprises tend to be trapped in survival mode, unable to access finance and business support services to move them up the ladder. This project will provide business development services (including small loans) to female-led small enterprises to make their business stronger and bankable.

This project builds on the success of PSPP interventions, combining consortium members’ collective expertise to deliver a joint initiative, aimed at strengthening and sustaining urban development structures/systems for improved living standards in Freetown’s informal settlements. The project has an advocacy, rather than service-delivery focus, for greater sustainability and impact and is aligned with the Freetown City Council’s (FCC) “Transform Freetown Framework”.

This proposal has been developed across our partnership. We have focussed on ensuring that we maximise benefits for low-income residents living in Lusaka’s peri-urban areas, by embedding, making more sustainable and rolling out the most successful elements of our projects, and through sharing our joint learning, presenting a powerful influencing force to ensure that progress is sustained and built on citywide.

Data Platform for Informal Settlements
Based on the Cape Town Collaboration Framework, we intend improving Date management platforms, develop tools around tenure and socio economic data in informal settlements. The grant will provide a network of existing NGO's, civil society and researchers with the platforms and tools to prepare citywide and provincial scaling of data management systems. This includes advocacy on various levels, as well as training of public servants, practitioners and community members.
